The South Carolina History Lecture Series
with Dr. Walter Edgar
Part III
"Old South/New South Carolina: 1860-2009"
In 1860, for the third time in its history, South Carolina opted to overthrow external authority. The result was war, occupation, and the destruction of a way of life that had existed for two centuries. The old order returned to power, but its inaction and economic distress let to the Tillmanite Movement of the 1890s. In the years that followed, a social and political structure emerged that lasted until the 1950s —"a state that forgot." Increasing pressures for change from without and within shook that older South Carolina to its very foundations. These included the New Deal, World War II, the civil rights movement, two-party politics, and economic development. The result has been nearly a half-century of changes and adjustments—and they are not over yet. South Carolina in the first decade of the twenty-first century is still very much a work in progress.
