Plat of Joseph West
This watercolor on parchment depicting land given by Lord Proprietor Anthony Ashley Cooper to Joseph West was executed by surveyor Maurice Matthew in 1680. The commander of the first fleet of permanent settlers to come to South Carolina from England, Joseph West served as governor of the Carolina territory intermittently from 1671-1684. The plat depicts native South Carolina fruits, flowers, animals, trees, a stream and a windmill and is one of the earliest depictions of native lowcountry flora and fauna.
It has been nearly forty years since this item was initially restored and framed. In order to ensure that the integrity of the colorful inks and fragile parchment paper is protected, new matting, framing and encasement in museum quality glass is essential.
