Established in 1855, the South Carolina Historical Society is dedicated to expanding, preserving, and making accessible our invaluable collection, and to encouraging interest and pride in the rich history of our state.

9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. (Saturdays)
On Tuesday evenings, the library will remain open
until 7:30 p.m., by appointment only.

The library will be closed on Friday, Feburary 5 and Saturday, February 6 for our Annual Meeting.
SCHS will also be closed February 13 -15 for President’s Day.

The South Carolina Historical Society welcomes visitors with physical or mobility limitations. However, our library is located on the main level of the historic Fireproof Building and the building does not have an elevator. If you have a handicap that prohibits you from climbing our staircases to reach the library, please contact Jane Aldrich (843-723-3225, ext. 14) or Mary Jo Fairchild (843-723-3225, ext. 12) in advance of your visit to make a research appointment. We will gladly set up a temporary research station for you on the ground floor of the building or otherwise accommodate you as best as we are able.
