Our Collections
There are four distinct types of collections at the Historical Society:
Manuscripts: These are documents that are, for the most part, unique to us and include family and business papers, church and organizational records, plats, and various other unpublished materials. Descriptions for nearly 100% of the Society’s records for processed manuscripts can be found through the online site.
Books: This collection includes any published works: books, pamphlets, articles, and maps.
Genealogy: This is a large index of our genealogy material. It is mainly composed of an index to our collection of published family histories, with over 60,000 records searchable by surname.
Visual Materials: This collection includes photographs, prints, engravings, paintings, etc. Currently only a small portion of the Society's 30,000 visual images can be found through the online site. New entries are being added weekly.
***** The system searches all four of the above sections simultaneously. If you would like to search for just one type of collection (manuscripts OR books, etc.) please select the “show search options” tab at the bottom of the search page and choose the appropriate limit.
How to Search
- Simple Search is the most broad and will give the most results. You’ll retrieve records with the search word anywhere within them- as an author, title, subject, or note. If you are getting too many irrelevant hits, try adding more words to your search term.
- Browse Search enables you to select from an alphabetical list of authors, subjects, or titles. This is especially useful if you’re not sure about the first name of an author or to narrow down a subject.
- Power Search gives you the advantage of combining different categories such as Author AND Subject OR Subject enabling you to search multiple terms simultaneously.
