Carolina Day 2006

On June 28, the Palmetto Society hosted its annual Carolina Day celebration in Charleston to commemorate the 230th anniversary of the victory of General William Moultrie and his patriot forces in the Battle of Sullivan’s Island, fought on June 28, 1776.

Following a 2:30 p.m. church service at First (Scots) Presbyterian Church, representatives from historical and cultural organizations from around the state assembled in Washington Park and paraded to White Point Gardens on the Battery for a wreath-laying ceremony; a speech by Marty D.Matthews, curator of research for the North Carolina Division of Historic Sites and author of Forgotten Founder: The Life and Times of Charles Pinckney; and a concert by the 246th Army National Guard Band.

The day’s festivities concluded with a ceremony and living-history presentations by the 2nd South Carolina Regiment at Fort Moultrie National Monument.
